Old Setups, Part One…

I found this photo today on my laptop.  Wow.  I used to like Carter Beauford.  A bunch.  Can you tell?  I still have a heavy dose of respect for him, don’t get me wrong.  I’ve just moved on.  No hard feelings, just moved on…

Photo taken – Summer of 2001

Other ways I’ve moved on:

  1. Monstrosity of an electronics setup.
    • SP202 sampler.  Ancient.
    • Both an Alesis DMPro (for the sub kick sound) and a D4 (for the click sound (the Tama triggered the D4)).
    • MIDI loom both to and from the 50lb Drum Kat.  Professionally loomed with cheap blue, green, and white electrical tape.
    • Two Mixers, harder to see is the blue Rolls mixer in the rack
  2. Percussion
    • Woodblock – I do not miss it. You shouldn’t either.
    • Cowbell – I should bring this back.
    • Tambourine – The Hi Hat mic is really competing for space now.
    • Wind Chimes!!!
  3. Other
    • I used to organize my stick bag.
    • My ride was mounted vertically (and it’s a Z-Custom!)
    • Extra pedals – Subkick and bank change switch.
    • Splash Cymbal – Shane Wilson won’t give this one back.

If there’s something I’ve missed.  Let me know.

  1. just passing through, doing research on griffin powermate…

I had to look up who “carter beauford” is. be glad u have moved on; that band is one of the worst, and i can’t imagine him doing anything creatively engaging, within their hyper-formulaic framework.

god, just thinking about DMB makes me want to cleanse my ears with some music that is substantial and threatening.

    have a nice, DMB-free life 😉

PS giant drum machine is cool. build a giant D4 next, then use it to sound-replace a bunch of giant 90’s pop and metal albums? 😉

  2. what cymbals are you using now?

i saw in the live dvd you were using sabian aa crashes, but still zildjian ride and hats.

i also heard that you switched to istanbul since then.

what brand/line/model of cymbals are you using now?

  3. Form over function is a string thing,
we thumpers will always follow the path of convienence after the cool factor wears away into reality.

  4. remember when you mounted a djembe on its side and kicked it with a soft beater for the “low kick” sound? and we thought djembes and congas were cool…

and has anyone else noticed that 36 yr old Joey Mcyntre from the recently reunited NKOTB looks exactly like Robbie?

  5. for some reason this reminds me of the first time i met you, which ironically was at Asbury Seminary chapel in Kentucky. You and Jack were playing with Chris and you had to play on this old, dusty kit. That was probably at a time even further back than this photo. classic.

  6. I have to know, are you ambidextrous like I have heard Carter is or do you just like keeping time with your left hand?

  7. Side Note: There is something of historical value in this picture having to do with another event that summer. Can you find it? Hint: It has nothing to do with my setup.
